Nerve Saving Treatment

Many of the patients who come to N1 Dental are very clear – if there's a safe, sensible way to avoid a root canal, they'd like to explore it.

Why early action matters

The hard enamel on the outside of the tooth acts like armour.

Once decay passes through this layer into the softer dentine underneath, it can spread more quickly towards the nerve.

If decay or a fracture reaches the nerve, or the inflammation becomes too severe, root canal treatment may be the only way to keep the tooth.

That's why acting early is so important – before pain and infection become advanced.

Root canal treatment has been used for many decades and can work well to save teeth that would otherwise be lost.

However, some people are uncomfortable with the idea, and in some cases we still see ongoing symptoms or persistent areas of infection around root-treated teeth on 3D imaging.

Our preference, wherever possible, is to protect the nerve of the tooth before things reach the stage where a root canal or tooth removal becomes the only realistic options.

What Nerve Saving Treatment involves

Nerve Saving Treatment is a conservative approach we use in carefully selected cases where the nerve is at risk, but we believe it may still be possible to keep it alive.

After removing decay or damaged tooth structure, we place modern bioactive materials – based on tricalcium silicate, such as Biodentine-type materials – directly over the area close to the nerve.

These materials are designed to help seal, protect, and support the nerve, and to encourage the tooth's natural repair response.

Important considerations

Even with careful planning, there are situations where the nerve cannot be saved and root canal treatment or extraction may still be required later.

However, when used appropriately, Nerve Saving Treatment can, in many cases, help reduce the need for root canal treatment and keep the tooth alive for longer.

Combining with protective restorations

Nerve Saving Treatment is usually combined with a strong, protective restoration to help shield the tooth from further damage.

  • Composite Restoration

  • Tooth Kind Crown or Onlay

It is most effective when carried out early, which is why timely assessment as part of a Biological Foundations consultation is so important.

The Preservation Cycle

This reflects our Preservation Cycle philosophy at N1 Dental – whenever we can, we aim to keep natural teeth healthy, functional, and alive.
