The mouth is home to a complex ecosystem of hundreds of different microorganisms, known as the oral microbiome.
In health, these bacteria exist in balance, helping to protect teeth, gums, and the surrounding tissues.
Dental disease is not caused by bacteria alone, but by imbalance — when harmful species become dominant and protective species are reduced.
For this reason, modern biological dentistry does not aim to eliminate all bacteria. Instead, the goal is to understand and support a healthier balance.
You experience recurring gum inflammation or bleeding
You have repeated decay without a clear explanation
You have persistent bad breath that hasn't resolved with routine care
You want a more personalised, preventative approach
You are planning more complex or staged treatment
Your teeth and gums are currently healthy and stable
Your concerns can be managed through routine assessment alone
There are no signs of ongoing inflammation or disease
Microbiome testing is always considered in context and is not required for everyone.
An imbalanced oral microbiome has been associated with an increased risk of tooth decay, gum disease, inflammation, and persistent oral symptoms such as bleeding or bad breath.
Emerging research also suggests links between long-standing oral inflammation and wider health concerns.
By assessing bacterial balance rather than treating symptoms alone, we can make more informed, preventative, and personalised decisions about care.
Saliva microbiome testing uses a simple saliva sample to analyse the types and relative proportions of bacteria present in your mouth. Advanced laboratory analysis allows us to assess:
The results do not provide a diagnosis on their own, but they offer valuable insight when interpreted alongside a full clinical examination.
The balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria
The presence of bacterial groups associated with gum disease or decay
Markers linked to inflammation and host response
Microbiome results help us tailor care more precisely. Depending on your clinical findings, results may help inform:
Preventative strategies
Gum treatment planning
Maintenance intervals
Supportive therapies
Home-care recommendations
The more accurate information we have, the better we can personalise decisions and reduce unnecessary intervention.
At N1 Dental, saliva microbiome testing is used as a supportive tool alongside a full clinical assessment, most commonly as part of a Biological Foundations consultation.
It is not provided in isolation.
